From
the introduction of the book: "A
mini-lesson is exactly what it says. It is meant to be a brief lesson giving direction
on a particular topic. A mini-lesson provides instruction that is focused on one
concept at a time. Mini-lessons are designed for immediate use with your students
prior to dismissing them for the remainder of the writing time. You
will find 25 different mini-lessons in this booklet for the primary grades. Perhaps
you will use a few or all of them during the year. These lessons are not meant
to be presented in the order they appear in the booklet. They are here as a reference
for you to use as you oversee the needs of your students. Watch your students
writing closely. From there, you will be able to present your own mini-lessons
based on the needs of individual students in your room. Numerous pieces
of children's' literature are presented in the mini-lessons. Do not feel tied
to these particular pieces if they are not available to you. Read the overall
concept being taught and then proceed to use what you have which will illustrate
the same points. Remember to keep your mini-lessons
to the point and to encourage your students to apply this new knowledge in their
writing. Be sure to walk around during writing time and visit with your students.
Let them know you are not looking for perfection, but for improvement. As you
continue to have students write every day, YOU WILL SEE IMPROVEMENT! You will
also see SUCCESS! Praise! Praise! Praise!"
